For PE portfolio companies, software quality is not an engineering abstraction — it is a balance sheet risk. Production defects translate directly to customer churn, support costs, delayed revenue, and in regulated industries, compliance exposure. The industry standard treatment is to hire dedicated QA engineers and accept slower delivery as the price of acceptable quality. At $10K-$15K per month for a QA resource, that is a material cost.
The assumption that faster output necessarily degrades quality has never been rigorously tested against AI-enabled development models. Until now.
What the Data Shows
Across a portfolio of 10 production systems (596,903 LOC, 2,561 commits, 116 calendar days), the validated defect rate is 12.1%. That is the percentage of total work units classified as product bugs — actual defects requiring correction.
For context, the industry benchmarks that defect rate sits against:
- Industry "acceptable" target: 20% of developer time on bug fixing (the 80/20 rule).
- Industry typical: 20-40% of effort on defect remediation.
- Industry worst case: 50%+ (per Coralogix and Rollbar data).
- McConnell's Code Complete benchmark: 70 bugs per 1,000 lines of code at introduction, 15 per 1,000 reaching customers.
The 12.1% rate was achieved at 4.6x output velocity versus baseline — meaning the operator was shipping faster than industry norms while producing fewer defects than industry norms. The two metrics moved together, not against each other.

Complex, integration-heavy products had higher rates but remained within industry norms. The quality floor stayed high even in worst cases.
How It Works
Three mechanisms explain why quality survived and improved as speed increased.
First, foundation inheritance. When 95%+ of infrastructure comes from proven patterns, the quality of those patterns propagates into every new product. When projects build on proven foundations, pushing faster means assembling more proven components per unit time.
For PE portfolio companies, the financial implication is direct: a 12.1% defect rate versus a 20-50% industry norm means less spent on remediation, fewer production incidents, lower customer support costs, and faster time-to-revenue on new capabilities. At portfolio scale across multiple companies, the compounding effect on quality-related costs is material.
The data also eliminates a common due diligence concern about AI-enabled development: that AI-assisted code is lower quality than human-written code.
